Multi-Factor Authentication

Multi-Factor Authorization

The more you know about cybercrime, the clearer it becomes that multi-factor authentication is the critical front line of your defense.

If you’d rather talk about it than read about it…

Multi-factor authorization (MFA) is a security best practice that requires two pieces of evidence to establish the legitimacy of the user seeking access to protected content. Almost everyone who banks online has experienced an enhancement where they provide their password and provide a numeric code that is sent to their cell phone in real-time.

Question Mark

Why It Matters:

Today’s criminals gain access to your computer in ways that allow them to create the illusion that they are the employee operating from inside the employee’s computer.

MFA requires criminals to have access to a second device, normally the legitimate user’s cell phone, in order to break into the application. MFA requires a real human being to access their phone to complete the log-in process and that stops the bad actor in their tracks.

What To Do:

As an individual user, you need to accept the introduction of MFA from your most vital online resources, especially for all of your financial services providers.

As a business leader, empower your IT team to implement MFA throughout your networks. “Empower” means financial and human resources to get the job done but, just as important, empower means changing your culture so that all employees embrace MFA instead of treating it as a nuisance. Forcing MFA on all employees is OK but it is much better to use the implementation of MFA to educate the entire company about individual responsibility for protecting the company from cyber-attacks.
